Web site analytics what do all the terms mean?
Measuring your results is the most important side of any marketing activity. Unfortunately many site owners don't take the time to understand them; this ultimately can lead to confusion. So what do you need to know?
A Hit or Hits.
The most common mistake that most owners make is to believe this is a site visitor. A hit is any object that has to be downloaded by the your internet browser to display the page, such as an image in a menu or say a background image. So count the images on your web page then divide it by your hits stat to get your true site visitors count for the day? I wouldn't bother doing that to be frank as it's a waste of your time. Just don't take too much notice of this stat.
Unique Visitors.
A unique site visitor is exactly what is sounds like, a brand new visitor that has arrived on your site from a new location that you have never seen before. This visitor is very important and you need to have information on what they do and where they came from.
Visitors.
A site visitor is a known visitor returning to the site again from a known location some people refer to this as a returning visitor.
Bounce rate.
Bounce Rate = Total Number of Visits Viewing One Page รท Total Number of Visits or the number of people who leave your web site on any given page and immediately exit the site.
Page Views.
The amount of pages that a visitor viewed in that session.
Average time on a page or site.
This is important when discovering what pages of content you have that people are really interested in. It can also guide you on simple things like price. If you have a very popular page on your site showing a product but no one ever buys it, it could be a price issue or maybe a trust issue. Either way you get a clue. No stats no clue.
